Better than Broadway

Saw it on Broadway and was blown away by the tour. The production is the exact Broadway set, music, costumes, lighting but the bonus is the cast. The leads Dan Deluca and Stephanie Styles have the most chemistry of any previous actors. Styles' Katherine is brilliant. Her comedic take and amazing vocals make her solo Watch What Happens a real stand out. The newsboys are younger than the Broadway cast making the story feel more real and they are the stars of the show with Ben Cook stealing the show. Jacob Kemp as Davey has outstanding voice. The added song for Crutchie sung beautifully by Zachary Sayle is wonderful. Newsies is great for families, date night and all ages. don't miss it!

why you should see newes.

Great performance, poor sound management

I had zero preconceptions having never seen any version of Newsies before. The acting, score, sets, choreography were all fantastic. So much energy and such great voices. Well cast — Peter Marais shone as Jack. The downside, that unfortunately affected everything, was the sound management. Actors' mikes kept cutting in and out during their lines. And none of the cast's mike volume was sufficient even when they were on. I had to strain to make out the words and I was just 14 rows back on the aisle of Orchestra. (FWIW, my annual hearing tests are absolutely normal.) If the orchestra was playing background music, you could forget being able to hear most of the dialog. Orchestra also overwhelmed singing voices in lower-toned numbers. The distraction and frustration kept taking me out of the story. Slightly improved after intermission, but not enough. Opening night bugs? Problem with Sarofim hall equipment? Bad engineering? Who knows. Hope they fix it.

I really wanted to love it but ...

... they made WAY TOO MANY major changes. I feel that the production could have been a million times better with better writing, way less changes, and smoother transitions. If I could give 5 stars to the ensemble singing and dancing I would. My problem is they made way too many story line and character changes that weren't necessary. It starts off with a ballad which cut down the initial energy that I was used to feeling once the movie starts. I am choosing not to identify the most drastic changes because I don't want to spoil it but I was annoyed the first minute of the production. The new songs that were added lacked the craft of the originals. They also change the lyrics of some of the old songs (and it wasn't for the better). The icing on the cake was the guy who played Davy ... was over-the-top whiny (a mixture between Ross in the later years of Friends and Mort from Family Guy). He did have a beautiful voice, though.
